Sister Mary Jean Ryan, FSM, is president and CEO of SSM Health Care, based in St. Louis, Mo., one of the largest Catholic healthcare systems in the United States with 23,000 employees and 5,000 affiliated physicians serving in 20 hospitals and three nursing homes. In 2002 the system became the first healthcare organization to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement.
During Sister Mary Jean’s 18-year tenure, she has emphasized three key themes: preservation of the earth’s resources; valuing ethnic and gender diversity; and commitment to continuous quality improvement. She is co-author of “CQI and the Renovation of an American Health Care System: A Culture Under Construction,” published by ASQ Quality Press in 1997.
Sister Mary Jean received a nursing diploma at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, in Madison, Wis., and a bachelor of science in nursing from Saint Louis University. She received a master’s degree in hospital and health administration from Xavier University, Cincinnati. She has been a Franciscan Sister of Mary for more than 40 years.
